Cavity collector
The Illustrated Guide to Renewable Technologies BG 1/2008, By Kevin Pennycook, published by BSRIA in March 2008, states: ‘In a cavity collector, heated air from a collector is circulated through the cavities in the building envelope. The buffer of heated air reduces the heat loss through the building envelope and in turn reduces the demand for space heating. In addition, occupant comfort conditions can be improved because of the higher temperature of the building fabric. The higher temperature also reduces the occurrence and magnitude of cold down-draughts along with reduced radiant heat transfer from the occupant to the wall surface. The collectors can operate at a high efficiency because the air returned to them is relatively cool.’
